𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 The Washington Guards were organized on March 7, 1836, at Washington-on-the-Brazos as a volunteer company composed of Texian settlers during the Texas Revolution. Formed in the immediate aftermath of independence, the unit operated under the authority of the provisional Texian government and reflected the rapid mobilization of local forces in response to the advancing Mexican army. Commanded by Captain A. B. Chance, the company was organized as part of the broader volunteer guard system rather than a permanent regular formation. Its existence illustrates the reliance on locally raised companies for defense and field service during the conflict, and it is notable as one of the few Texian units with a documented lineage that can be traced through official records back to the era of the Republic of Texas. 1836-1846
