Description
In 1806, the Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel fell under French occupation, forcing Duke Friedrich Wilhelm—later remembered as the “Black Duke”—into exile. Refusing to submit to Napoleonic rule, he formed the Black Brunswickers, a volunteer corps made up of loyal men from the duchy alongside distinguished formations such as the Leib-Bataillon. Beyond serving as a military force, the corps became a powerful symbol of Brunswickian independence and resistance. Brunswickian soldiers later fought throughout the War of the Sixth Coalition (1813–1814), taking part in major campaigns across Germany and France, before joining the allied armies again during the Waterloo Campaign of 1815. Their courage, discipline, and steadfast loyalty to the Duke earned them a respected reputation among the German forces of the Napoleonic Wars.
