Description
Motto: Sursam Prorsusque ("Upward and Onward") 2 Squadron of the South African Air Force, known as “The Flying Cheetahs,” is the country’s only front-line fighter squadron, based at AfB Makhado in Limpopo. Established in 1940, the unit has a distinguished history, having served with distinction in East Africa, North Africa, Italy, and Korea, where it earned international recognition flying alongside United Nations forces. Over the decades, the squadron has operated a wide range of aircraft—from Tomahawks and Spitfires in World War II, to Mirages and Cheetahs during the Border War, and today the Saab JAS 39 Gripen. Its role remains vital, providing South Africa with air defence, interception, reconnaissance, and joint operational support, making it the sharp edge of the nation’s air combat capability.
