The California Department of State—formally known as the California Secretary of State’s Office—was established in 1850, the same year California became a state. Its earliest mandate came from the Act Concerning the Public Archives, signed by the first governor, Peter Burnett, which tasked the department with preserving all documents tied to California’s political history.
