Description
The Holy Roman Empire began in 800 AD when Charlemagne was crowned “Emperor of the Romans” by Pope Leo III, reviving the idea of a Western Roman Empire under Christian rule. After his death, the empire split but the title survived and was restored in 962 AD by Otto I of Germany. It was a decentralized collection of kingdoms, duchies, principalities, free cities, and church lands across Central Europe, mainly modern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and parts of Italy and the Low Countries. The emperor was elected by Prince-Electors and had limited power, relying on nobles and the Church. The empire fragmented further after the Protestant Reformation, leading to divisions. The Thirty Years’ War and Peace of Westphalia weakened imperial authority. It lost power over time and ended in 1806 when Emperor Francis II abdicated under Napoleon’s pressure.
