The Royal Guard was, throughout its existancea small group of elite soldiers of the French 'Army of Italy' under the command of Eugène de Beauharnais(French general and Viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy). It always remained a relatively small unit, consisting of only a few battalions, though it was highly renowned by French and Italian generals alike as a reliable unit in battle.
