Paramilitary forces of organisations such as the Church of the Eternal Fire are arch enemies to the Lodge and other Witches and Herbalists. For all their power and training they are often in hiding or under the protection of the Lodge. The Lodge of Sorceresses is home to The Continents most powerful sorceresses founded by the Redanian Sorceress, Philippa Eilhart. The Lodge seeks to deal with magic outside of politics and acquire more knowledge about magic. The secret group only accepts female candidates because they view men to be incompetent with magic, thus making them a sisterhood.
