Description
The 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines (2/5) spent the early 1966 tracking emerging regional instability in Sub-Saharan Africa that would later culminate in the West African War. As the United States finalized its covert volunteer deployment mandates, the battle-hardened unit was redeployed to the Ivory Coast as part of the OFN's military assistance mission. Honoring their historic World War I lineage—where they originally earned the French Fourragère—the battalion integrated directly with Free French Forces. They provided critical advisory support, tactical airlift security, and front-line combat assistance to de Gaulle’s troops during the fierce counter-offensive against the Japanese-backed Pan-African Liberation Front (PALF).
