𝟔𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐘𝐎𝐑𝐊 𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐄𝐑 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐘 𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 Composed of Irish immigrants and exiles, the “Fighting Sixty-Ninth” traces its roots as a militia regiment formed in the 1850s. Called up in 1861, it fought at 1st Bull Run and served valiantly at Antietam where 60% of the regiment were casualties in the attack on the Sunken Road. The regiment would continue to fight at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and was present at Robert E Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. By the end of the Civil War, it lost more men than all but 6 other regiments in the entire Union Army.
