The Grenadier Guards trace their lineage back to 1656, when Lord W e n t w o r t h'ss Regiment was raised in Bruges, in the Spanish Netherlands (present-day Belgium), from gentlemen of the Honourable Artillery Company by the then heir to the throne, Prince Charles (later King Charles II) where it formed a part of exiled King's bodyguard.
