Moldavian Principality #472253516
OtherENhistorygeographyeducation
Description
In the late 17th and early 18th century, Moldavia stood as an Ottoman vassal caught at the crossroads of Ottoman, Habsburg, and Russian power struggles. The fateful alliance of Prince Dimitrie Cantemir with Peter the Great in 1711 ended in defeat at Stănilești, prompting the Ottomans to replace native rulers with Phanariote princes from Constantinople. This ushered in an era of heavier taxation, diminished autonomy, and deepening foreign influence. Yet, despite political decline, Moldavia saw notable cultural and religious activity, with churches, monasteries, and schools flourishing under princely patronage. Its economy remained rooted in agriculture and livestock, while trade along the Dniester, Prut, and Danube connected the principality to the wider world.
