Légion de la Vistule. #47670334
Description
The Polish military units in France during the Napoleonic Wars were most famously known as the Polish Legions (Legiony Polskie we Włoszech), also called the Dąbrowski Legions after their most famous commander, Jan Henryk Dąbrowski. These were Polish army-in-exile formations created after the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, when many Poles hoped Revolutionary France and later Napoleon Bonaparte would restore Polish independence. With French support, Polish officers and soldiers formed units that served alongside the French Army, bearing Polish military ranks and fighting in most of Napoleon’s campaigns from the West Indies to Italy, Egypt, and beyond. Later, in 1808, these forces were reorganized into the Vistula Legion (Légion de la Vistule), which became a distinct Polish cavalry and infantry unit within the French Army. The Vistula Legion fought in Spain, Russia, and Germany, and was known for its discipline and ferocity in battle. Waterloo at home Group
