The Imperial German Guard #4806725
OtherENHistoryMilitaryRoman Empire
Description
THE IMPERIAL GERMAN GUARD Also known as the Germanic Guard, or Numerus Batavorum, the Imperial German Guard served alongside the Praetorians as the guardsmen of the Emperor and his family. Unlike the Praetorians, however, these guardsmen were recruited from the various Germanic tribes outside of Rome's boundaries, as such men would not have any political affiliations within Rome aside to the Emperor himself. Although the German Guard was officially established by Augustus Julius Caesar, the concept of a bodyguard composed of Germans can be traced back to 48 B.C., under the command of Gaius Julius Caesar.
