It was in a state of personal union with the french empire, with Napoleon as King and theoretical head of state, though his step-son Eugene ran the Kingdom as Viceroy. The Italians fought with such valor and discipline that they were regarded as among the best in Europe, even when being compared directly to French and British troops.
