Description
From 1805 to 1810, Texel formed part of the Kingdom of Holland, a Napoleonic state ruled by Louis Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon. During this period, the island was affected by the political and military pressures of the Napoleonic Wars. Texel’s location at the entrance to the Zuiderzee gave it strategic importance for coastal defense and naval control, particularly against British forces in the North Sea. Military activity and fortifications became more prominent, influencing daily life on the island. Economically, Texel suffered from disruptions caused by the Continental System, which restricted trade with Britain and damaged maritime commerce. Fishing and agriculture remained essential, but shortages and smuggling increased as residents adapted to wartime conditions.
