Description
The DSS's most visible role is in providing security to the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and other senior diplomats both domestically and abroad. As part of its broad mandate to provide a safe and secure environment for U.S. diplomacy, the agency also safeguards foreign dignitaries, advises U.S. ambassadors on security matters, and manages security programs for international events. It often pursues these objectives in cooperation with U.S. and foreign law enforcement agencies. The Diplomatic Security Service's mandate includes criminal investigations, counterintelligence, and cyber-security. Its special agents are unique in the U.S. in being both members of the Foreign Service and law enforcement officers with investigatory and arresting powers.
