𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 – 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚 “The Fort Settlement Militia” The Fort Bend Militia was organized in and around the Fort Bend settlement, most noticeably Richmond. They were first organized in October 1835 for the Revolution, and once again in May 1837 to help defend the Republic’s vital agricultural heartland and western settlement lines along the Brazos River. Composed of local planters, farmers, and frontiersmen, the militia supported regional security by patrolling the river bottoms, tracking raiding parties, and reinforcing neighboring settlements during periods of alarm. Serving as a swift-riding civic guard and frontier defense company, the Militia reflected the inland community’s need for immediate protection against sudden incursions in the absence of regular army garrisons. Though operating primarily as mounted minutemen, they provided a reliable shield for the vulnerable settlements during the turbulent years of the Republic.
