Description
The City of Gotham was founded in the mid-1600s (circa 1660s) on the northeastern Atlantic coast by Dutch traders under colonial charter, later expanded by English settlers as control of the region shifted. Its growth was driven by a deep natural harbor and island-rich coastline, making it an early maritime hub. Before settlement, Indigenous peoples lived across Gotham Bay and its rivers for centuries, using the land for fishing, travel, and seasonal habitation. By the 18th and 19th centuries, Gotham became a major industrial port city, built on shipping, manufacturing, and trade. Its complex geography led to bridges, ferries, railways, and tunnels connecting its districts. By 1989, Gotham was a dense metropolis divided into Bristol, Burnley, the Narrows, and Old Gotham, with government centered at Gotham Municipal Hall in Bristol.
