𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐢𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝟏𝟖𝟓𝟒-𝟏𝟖𝟔𝟏 The New South Wales Volunteer Rifle Corps, formed in 1854, was an early citizen-soldier force in response to the Crimean War and the Russian scare. Initially, the corps consisted of a troop of cavalry, a battery of artillery, and six companies of infantry. The unit, later known as the Sydney Battalion, was largely ceremonial but played a crucial role during times of crisis, such as the Lambing Flat riots in 1861. It served as a precursor to the modern Australian Army reserves.
