Description
Legio I Italica --First Italian Legion-- A Roman Legion consists of volunteers from all social classes, and even extended service beyond to non-citizens who can sign on as auxilliae and will be rewarded Roman citizenship upon completion of service and all the rights and privileges that it entails. The epithet Italica is a reference to the Italian origin of its first recruits who were six foot tall Italians who were recruited for a campaign in Armenia. Legio I was so formidable that Emperor Nero nicknamed it "the phalanx of Alexander the Great".
