Description
The Austrian Empire was created in 1804 by Emperor Francis II in response to Napoleon Bonaparte being proclaimed Emperor of the French—as a counterbalance to Napoleon's empire. In 1806, under pressure from Napoleon, the Holy Roman Empire, traditionally ruled by the monarch of the Habsburg monarchy, was abolished. The Austrians suffered several major defeats against French forces but ultimately emerged victorious (as part of the Sixth and Seventh Anti-French Coalitions) in the Napoleonic Wars and hosted the Congress of Vienna. Since for almost its entire existence the Holy Roman Empire was the only state in Western Europe whose ruler carried the title of emperor, it was often simply known as 'the Empire.' In 18th-century Russian documents, the term 'Tsesaria' was also used. In the 19th century, after the creation of the Austrian Empire, this term was informally applied to it as well.
