United States Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island #5084116
Description
United States Penitentiary Alcatraz Island Federal Bureau of Prisons 19XX USP Alcatraz Island began its life as a military fortification to protect the San Fransisco Bay in the 1850s. It then, in 1912, became a military prison and began to house inmates. In 1934 the military prison was converted to a federal prison which remained open until 1963, when it closed its doors for the last time. The former prison was then turned into a museum and still stands - partially restored - as a tourist attraction. The prison held many high-profile inmates in its time in operation, including Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. It was also scene to the infamous 1962 "Escape from Alcatraz" an impressive but mysterious prison escape that's etched the name of Alcatraz into history. The prison closed in 1963 because of concerns over security, high maintenance costs and a bad reputation it had taken on in its many years of operation. Warden:
