United States Of América #508738235
Description
The foundation of America began in the early 1600s when English settlers established colonies along the Atlantic coast. In 1607, Jamestown in Virginia became the first permanent English settlement. The colonists faced starvation, disease, and conflict with Native Americans, but tobacco farming helped the colony survive and prosper. In 1620, the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower and founded Plymouth Colony in present-day Massachusetts. They sought religious freedom and signed the Mayflower Compact, an important step toward self-government. During the 1600s and 1700s, the thirteen colonies grew rapidly. Colonists developed farms, towns, and trade networks. The Southern colonies relied heavily on plantation agriculture and enslaved African labor, while the New England colonies focused on fishing, shipbuilding, and commerce. Although the colonies were under British rule, they developed traditions of local government and representative assemblies.
