A period of frantic diplomatic efforts and rearmament followed. The Soviet Union kept up intense pressure on Finland, thereby hastening the Finnish efforts to improve the security of the country. After an short Winter War both sides realized it was an war none could afford to win. Therefore a period of truce followed, and after a few months of intense diplomatic efforts, peace could finally be announced.
