𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐱𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐬 - 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 Organized at Groce’s Plantation on April 8, 1836, under Sam Houston, the 1st Regiment of Texas Volunteers served as the core infantry force for the provisional Texian government. Led by elected Colonel Edward Burleson, this regiment of 450–500 early settlers and frontiersmen successfully bridged the gap between raw local militias and a structured national army. Despite intense camp unrest, Burleson's steady leadership kept the fractious companies unified throughout the grueling "Runaway Scrape" retreat across Texas. Crucially, the regiment anchored the center of the primary battle line at San Jacinto, where their devastating marksmanship secured a decisive victory. After their scouts captured General Santa Anna and won Texas independence, the volunteer unit was dismantled to make way for a permanent regular military.
