יעודה של חטיבת גבעתי הוא הגנה ושמירה על גבולות המדינה מפני איומי הטרור השונים. החטיבה מורכבת משלושה גדודים סדירים ומגדס"ר המורכב מפלס"ר שמתמחה במשימות ניווט, #### ומודיעין; פלוגת נ"ט, האחראית על הפעלת טילי עורב מכלי רכב ונגמ"שים; פלוגת חיל הקשר ופלוגת חיל ההנדסה המתמחה בחבלה, מיקוש, מלכוד ופיצוץ מטענים. חטיבת גבעתי (חטיבה 84) היא חטיבת חיל רגלים סדירה בצה"ל, הנמצאת תחת עוצבת הפלדה. החטיבה הוקמה בשנת 1983 ונקראה על שם חטיבת גבעתי שפעלה במלחמת העצמאות. חיילי חטיבת גבעתי חובשים כומתה בצבע סגול עם סמל חיל הרגלים ונועלים נעליים שחורות. סמלה של החטיבה משלב בתוכו את סמלי חטיבת גבעתי שלחמה בתש"ח וסיירת שקד.
