After the British engagement in the Seven Years war, the English army decided that they needed to raise an experimental rifle corps after seeing how effective the French skirmishers were against conventional English lines in America. The Rifles were officially raised in 1800 and comprised of men from various other regiments. Other than the regular army they were trained in skirmish tactics, in small unit force, and armed with Rifles, and a Green uniform.
