𝐈𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝑳’𝒊𝒏𝒅𝐞𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒅’𝑰𝒓𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒆! After two failed invasions of Ireland in 1796 and 1798, Irish generals in the French army urged Napoleon to create a new Irish corps to spearhead another invasion. In 1803 Napoleon approved the formation of a light infantry battalion, La Légion Irlandaise, which consisted of an officer’s staff of ex-United Irishmen who fought in the 1798 Rebellion. The Legion was commanded by Dubliner Bernard McSheedy, kitted out with emerald green uniforms and presented with a green flag with four gold harps in the corners and inscribed with ‘Liberté des Consciences/ Indépendance d’Irlande’ (Freedom of Conscience/ Independence of Ireland). It was during the Siege of Astorga in 1810 where the Legion would gain fame for bravery when it joined the 'forlorn hope' and forced the Spanish garrison to surrender. 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲
