Grеtna Police Department #52946955
Description
The Gretna Police Department (GPD) was established in 1908 as the city transitioned from a small waterfront community into a growing commercial center. Originally consisting of only a handful of officers on foot patrol, the department focused on protecting local businesses, the ferry terminal, and nearby neighborhoods. Following World War II, Gretna experienced rapid suburban growth, leading to the expansion of the department into specialized divisions including Criminal Investigations, Traffic Enforcement, and K-9. By 2006, the Gretna Police Department employs over 180 sworn officers and 45 civilian employees, making it one of the most respected municipal law enforcement agencies in Mountclair. Officers respond to over 85,000 calls for service annually, ranging from routine traffic enforcement to violent crime investigations.
