Indian Sepoys were introduced into the British Army in 1857, in response to the Indian Rebellion of 1857, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny. The British East India Company had been recruiting local soldiers, known as sepoys, to maintain control over Indian territories. After suppressing the rebellion, the British government decided to reorganize the army, creating the British Indian Army, which would serve as a loyal force to maintain British control over India.
