Description
The Duchy of Carinthia was established in 976 by Holy Roman Emperor Otto II. In order to prevent the Duchy of Bavaria from becoming excessively powerful, its southeastern territories were separated and formed into a new duchy. This new duchy was built upon the legacy of the former Principality of Carantania and was designed as a buffer region to protect the empire’s eastern border. The duke is the absolute ruler of the country. Justice, taxation, land distribution, and the army are all carried out directly by the duke’s authority. The nobles swear loyalty in exchange for land; this order is maintained through oaths and the sword. In Carinthia, power comes not from title but from obedience. Betrayal is unforgivable, and disorder is not tolerated. In these lands, ruling is as much about preserving as it is about holding power.
