Description

The narwhal, or narwhale, Monodon monoceros, is a medium-sized toothed whale that lives year-round in the Arctic. One of two living species of whale in the Monodontidae family, along with the beluga whale, the narwhal males are distinguished by a characteristic long, straight, helical tusk extending from their upper left jaw. The Narwhals “tusk” is actually an overgrown tooth that grows out of a hole in the Narwhals upper lip. No one knows why the Narwhal has this tusk; it has not been shown to have any purpose.

Growth

Growth history is still building. We hold one measurement for this entry. A trend needs at least two, taken days apart — so this will fill in on its own rather than being estimated. We do not publish numbers we have not measured.
