5th Michigan Heavy Artillery Regiment The 5th Michigan Heavy Artillery was re-designated from the 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Port Hudso This was a reward for its valiant efforts in the Siege of Port Hudso Louisiana. Also receiving combat at the Battle of Baton Rouge taking extreme casualties from disease as it had claimed the lives of 85% of its servicemen. Finally, being mustered out of service August 20th, 1865.
