Description

The Kingdom of Württemberg was a German state in southwestern Germany that rose to prominence during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1806, Duke Frederick II became King Frederick I, transforming Württemberg into a kingdom and strengthening its position among the German states. Württemberg became a close ally of Napoleon Bonaparte and joined the Confederation of the Rhine in 1806. Its army was reorganized and expanded, eventually becoming one of the more important contingents among the German states allied with France. Württemberg troops participated in several major campaigns, including the War of the Fifth Coalition (1809) and, most notably, Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812. The Württemberg contingent suffered enormous losses during the retreat from Russia. After the Battle of Leipzig (1813), Württemberg turned arms against Napoleon and joined the coalition. Württemberg helped the coalition to defeat Napoleon and even took part in the battle of Paris (1814) where France was defeated.
