Although already among the most influential landowners in Britain through inheritance, his elevation to a dukedom derived primarily from his marriage to Elizabeth Gordon, 19th Countess of Sutherland, one of Scotland’s greatest hereditary peers. Their combined holdings formed one of the largest landed fortunes in the United Kingdom, and in recognition of the family’s immense influence and loyal service to the Crown, King William IV created the Dukedom of Sutherland.
