Description
The United States Forest Service (USFS) is an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture responsible for managing approximately 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands. Its mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of these public lands for present and future generations. The USFS protects natural resources, manages timber and wildlife habitats, maintains trails and recreation areas, conducts wildfire prevention and suppression, and supports conservation through scientific research. The agency also works closely with local, state, tribal, and federal partners to reduce wildfire risk, restore ecosystems, enforce federal laws on National Forest System lands, and provide safe outdoor recreation opportunities while balancing environmental stewardship with responsible resource management.
