Description
Formation: The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad was built in 1988 and was opened in that year to pull excursion trains after when Norfolk Southern abandoned the line due to the lack of free traffic. Initial Operation: The State of North Carolina purchased the tracks to preserve them, allowing the new tourist railroad to start operations between Dillsboro and Nantahala.
