Description
Ever since the Ottoman conquest of Egypt, the country was not fully integrated into the Ottoman state. The Timar system was not applied, and so the former overlords of Egypt, the Mamlukes, still held influence in Egypt. Various Mamluks emirs fought with the Ottoman Governors over control of the country. However, until the time of Ali Bey, none of them tried to gain independence from the Ottomans. Ali Bey was a Georgian that was kidnapped at a young ### and sold to Egypt. There he slowly gained power and influence in Egypt. In 1768, he would take control of the province.
