Description

The Kingdom of Belgium till 1919 was a legally "perpetually neutral" state bound by the Treaty of London (1839). Its borders were smaller, excluding the German-speaking territories acquired after World War I, and it held the massive Belgian Congo as a colony. Under the 1839 treaty, Belgium was mandated to remain perpetually neutral in all European conflicts. However, this status ended abruptly on August 4, 1914, when Germany violated Belgian borders to execute the Schlieffen Plan. Belgium fought the war as an invaded Allied power under King Albert I. Founded in 1830 following the Belgian Revolution against the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, early Belgium quickly became a major industrial power. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was also a prominent colonial empire with the Belgian Congo.
