Description
Originating as a social club funded by prominent members of New York society, the 79th New York Infantry trained as heavy artillery and acted as a parade unit before the Civil War. By the end of the conflict, the 79th had taken part in many significant battles battles including Fredericksburg, The Wilderness, Bull Run, and Petersburg. In 1865, the 79th was relegated to its former status as a militia but was only officially disbanded in 1876.
