𝐀𝐫𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚 The Army of Northern Virginia, was the Confederacy's primary army in the Confederate Department of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. Formed initially as the CS Army of the Potomac, it merged with other commands in March 1861 and was renamed the Army of Northern Virginia. Often outnumbered in comparison to the larger Union armies, it achieved notable victories such as at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville under its famed commander, General R. E. Lee. Towards the end of the war however, the Union's repeated attacks managed to wear it down in a war of attrition until it surrendered in April 1865.
