นครสวรรค์เคยมีชื่อเดิมในประวัติศาสตร์ว่า "เมืองพระบาง" และเป็นเมืองหน้าด่านยุทธศาสตร์สำคัญตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัยจนถึงอยุธยา ในช่วงต้นอยุธยา เมืองนี้ยังมีชื่อว่า "เมืองพระบาง" ทำหน้าที่เป็นรัฐกึ่งกลางและเมืองหน้าด่านคอยสกัดทัพจากทางเหนือ แต่เมื่อกรุงศรีอยุธยาสามารถผนวกอาณาจักรสุโขทัยเข้ามาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งได้อย่างสมบูรณ์ในช่วงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 21–22 ราชสำนักอยุธยาก็ได้ทำการเปลี่ยนชื่อจากเมืองพระบางเป็น "เมืองนครสวรรค์" เพื่อเป็นศุภนิมิตหมายอันดีและยกระดับขึ้นเป็น หัวเมืองชั้นตรี ที่ขึ้นตรงต่อกรุงศรีอยุธยา
