Description

At the heart of the Spartan state stood her elite citizen hoplites, the embodiment of its martial ethos. Bred for warfare, Spartans from citizen lineage would be taken from their families at early youth to be subjected into a rigorous military training regimen until they were reborn as fully fledged citizens at the age of thirty. It was through this rigorous rite of passage from youth that propagated the legendary exploits of the Spartans - considered the best of the best on land and, once able, even at sea. These warriors of such renown were even considered superior to multiple warriors of other Greek city-states alone, driving home the idea that the Spartans were next to superhuman in their combat efficiency. This belief was rooted in the unyielding Spartan code: "With it or on it," which was a testament to the unyielding devotion to courage, excellence, and self-sacrifice in Spartan society, in which a Spartan either came home with his shield, or dead upon it.
