Covertly organized by the CIA, MI6, and national intelligence agencies, it trained operatives in sabotage, espionage, and guerrilla warfare. Though intended as a defense mechanism, Gladio became notorious for its involvement in anti-communist operations, political manipulation, and attack on domestic civilians across countries, particularly in Italy during the Cold War. Its existence was publicly exposed in the 1990s, revealing a clandestine infrastructure that operated outside democratic oversight across at least 14 European countries.
