Description
The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers were an infantry regiment of the British Army, existing for over 200 Years. Raised in 1674 as one of three 'English' units apart of the Dutch Anglo-Scots Brigade before becoming apart of the English establishment in 1689, in 1751 it became the 5th Regiment of Foot, with the regional title 'Northumberland' added in 1782; designated as a Fusilier unit. The regiment earned nicknames such as “The Fighting 5th”, and “The Old and Bold”, It continued service until the Childers Reforms of 1881, when it became the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, and later was amalgamated in 1968 with other fusilier regiments to form the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
