Görevi, Batı Anadolu kıyılarının güvenliğini sağlamaktır. Ege adalarında Yunanistan'ın silahlanmasının yarattığı tehdide karşı, özellikle Yunanistan'da 21 Nisan 1967 tarihinde yapılan darbe sonrası gerginliğin arttığı bir dönemde yapılan Kıbrıs Harekâtı ile durumun daha da gerginleşmesi ve savaş ihtimalinin artması üzerine NATO'dan bağımsız olarak 20 Temmuz 1975 tarihinde kuruldu.
