Grand-Duché de Clèves-Berg #588558730
Description
Although having a short existence in the wider scale of European history, the Grand Duchy of Berg fielded a quite capable and beautiful army during the Napoleonic Wars. During the fall of the Holy Roman Empire, brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, Joachim Murat, claimed sovereignty and joined the new Confederation of the Rhine, reviving the historical Union of Cleves in the process. Murat amassed a sizeable nation during the German Mediatization, however in July 1808, Napoleon assigned him King of Naples, and from thereon, Napoleon ruled the grand duchy. The Berger state continued uninterrupted until 1810, when several territorial changes were made as Napoleon annexed the neighboring Kingdom of Holland and territories in Northwestern Germany, the latter of which formed the new Hanseatic Departments. The grand duchy's short existence came to an end when the French forces pulled back in the course of the German campaign of 1813, handing the territory into Prussian hands.
