Description

Lore: In the rugged, mountainous stretches of Clark County, State of Mayflower, the Mayflower Northern Front was born from waves of Finnish immigrants who arrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. While the famous Mayflower brought English settlers to the eastern shores centuries earlier, these Finns saw themselves as the true northern pioneers of the Union of Columbia. Fleeing Russian rule, hard times, and the search for new land that reminded them of the taiga, they settled in the dense forests, iron-rich hills, and remote valleys of what is now Clark County. They formed tight-knit logging camps, mining outposts, and isolated homesteads around areas like Mersea Island’s outskirts and the wilder northern territories. The Mayflower Northern Front started as a loose brotherhood in the 1890s–1910s. They chose the name to declare: “The Mayflower story belongs to the North too. We crossed oceans and survived winters that would break lesser men. This county is our new Pohjola.”
