O Centro de Instrução de Operações na Caatinga impõe ao combatente o desafio de sobreviver e operar sob o sol implacável do semiárido brasileiro onde a rusticidade é a regra principal. O estágio coloca o militar em um cenário de solo rachado e vegetação agressiva composta por espinhos de xique-xique e mandacaru que punem qualquer descuido durante a progressão. O foco total reside na gestão crítica de hidratação e na resistência física superior para realizar marchas exaustivas em temperaturas elevadas enquanto executa missões de busca e apreensão. Somente os mais fortes e resilientes conseguem superar a sede e o cansaço extremo para se tornarem guerreiros de selva de ferro prontos para defender o Sertão acima de qualquer sacrifício.
