Description
The Provisional Government, led by Michael Collins, was trying to assert control over the country while fighting anti-Treaty forces who rejected the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Dublin was tense and partially under military control following the bombardment of the Four Courts, where anti-Treaty IRA members had been based. Although the Free State had not yet been formally inaugurated (it would officially come into existence in December 1922), its institutions were taking shape, including the National Army and a developing civil administration. Politically divided and militarily engaged, the Free State at that moment was a fragile new state—attempting to establish authority, maintain order, and prove its legitimacy while facing armed opposition from former comrades.
